Over Abner Sergooris
Dr. Abner Sergooris holds a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy, with a specialisation in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and earned his PhD at the Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences, Hasselt University.
He combines clinical expertise with scientific research to improve care for people with hip conditions. In his role as Head of Research at the European Hip Center, Abner is involved in developing and optimising evidence-based rehabilitation pathways for hip conditions, with a strong focus on translating scientific insights into clinically applicable treatment strategies.
His research background is based on a biopsychosocial approach to hip osteoarthritis and hip rehabilitation, with particular attention to pain mechanisms, psychological factors, patient phenotyping, and prognostic factors that influence recovery after hip surgery. In his work, he has investigated topics such as fear-avoidance behaviour, psychological trauma, pain sensitisation, and pre- to postoperative rehabilitation after total hip arthroplasty.
Clinically, Abner is specialised in the assessment and treatment of acute and chronic hip and groin pain, including conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and hip osteoarthritis. His ambition is to continuously improve treatment pathways and contribute to better long-term outcomes and a better quality of life for people with hip complaints.
