Total Hip Arthroplasty Revision, Targeted Component Replacement

When the cup, stem, head or liner of your hip arthroplasty becomes loose, worn or infected, we selectively replace the defective component, or in rare cases the entire prosthesis, via a muscle-sparing direct anterior approach.

What is a hip arthroplasty revision?

A hip arthroplasty consists of 4 components: an outer shell, an inner liner, a ball, and a stem. The components fixed in the bone (cup and stem) can loosen over time. This can cause hip pain or upper leg pain when bearing weight or pressure on the joint. The inner liner and the ball can wear out, causing hip pain during rotations, flexion movements, and weight bearing or pressure on the joint.

If necessary, the entire prosthesis can be replaced, for example, in the case of a prosthetic infection.

A hip arthroplasty revision is an operation in which the loosened or worn component is replaced with a new one. The goal of this operation is to relieve pain and improve mobility.

How is a total hip arthroplasty revision performed?

    • A small incision is made at the front of the hip.
    • The muscles are held aside without damaging them.
    • The component to be replaced is removed and replaced with a new component. If necessary, the entire prosthesis is replaced.
    • The wound is closed, after which the recovery process begins.

Our HipCloud application guides and monitors the pre- and post-operative trajectory.

What can you expect after the surgery?

    • Immediately after surgery: independent walking with crutches. In complex revisions, you may temporarily not be allowed to bear full weight.
    • Within a few weeks: return to daily activities.
    • Within 6 months: resumption of sports activities, depending on the load.

    Our approach

At the European Hip Center, we combine advanced surgical techniques with personalised care. HipCloud, our digital platform, plays an important role in this:
