PLAC Repair, Surgical Treatment for Sports Groin Injury

A PLAC lesion is a tear in the adductor tendon that sometimes extends into the abdominal muscles, a typical injury in footballers and hockey players. We restore the anatomy with anchors in the pubic bone, making it possible to return to sport.

    What is a PLAC repair?

A PLAC repair is an operation to repair a tear in the adductor muscles (PLAC lesion), which can also extend to the abdominal muscles. There are different types of PLAC injuries, depending on the extent of the tear in the adductor muscles and how far this tear extends into the abdominal muscles.

The aim of this operation is to anatomically repair the tear so that you experience less pain and can return to sports.

How is a PLAC repair performed?

    • A small incision is made in the adductor region, just below the pubic bone.
    • The muscles are held aside without damaging them.
    • The tear in the adductor muscles (and abdominal muscles if necessary) is repaired with anchors into the pubic bone.
    • The wound is closed, after which the recovery process begins.

This operation is performed as a day-case procedure.

Our HipCloud application guides and monitors the pre- and post-operative pathway.

What can you expect after the operation?

    • Immediately after the operation, you are allowed to bear full weight. If necessary, you can walk with crutches for support for 2 weeks. For the first 2 weeks, the wound needs to heal, and you should not strain it with exercise therapy.
    • From 2 weeks: you can start rehabilitation. Your exercise therapy will be adjusted to the type of injury you had before the operation.
    • After 3 to 6 months: full resumption of sports activities.

    Our approach

At the European Hip Center, we combine advanced surgical techniques with personalised care. HipCloud, our digital platform, plays an important role in this:

    • Before the operation: preparation with education and guidance.
    • After the operation: monitoring your recovery and support during rehabilitation.

This approach ensures a faster and safer recovery, tailored to your personal situation.
