Capsuloplasty, anatomical repair of the hip capsule

A torn or insufficient hip capsule, for example after a previous arthroscopy or trauma, causes pain and instability. Using a muscle-sparing anterior approach, we suture the capsule so that the joint can once again bear full weight.

A torn or insufficient hip capsule, for example after a previous arthroscopy or trauma, causes pain and instability. Using a muscle-sparing anterior approach, we suture the capsule so that the joint can once again bear full weight.

    What is capsulorrhaphy?

The hip joint is encapsulated by the joint capsule. After surgery to the capsule (e.g., during arthroscopy), or after trauma, the capsule may be torn. Capsulorrhaphy is an operation where the joint capsule is sutured to anatomically repair the capsule.

The goal of this operation is to reduce pain so that full weight-bearing on the hip joint can be resumed.

    How is capsulorrhaphy performed?

    • You will be given a local anaesthetic with a spinal block and sedation.
    • The surgeon makes an incision at the front of the hip.
    • The muscles are retracted and not cut.
    • The capsule is repaired with several sutures. Afterwards, the wound is closed with absorbable stitches and wound adhesive.

This operation is performed as a day-case procedure.

Our HipCloud application guides and monitors the pre- and post-operative pathway.

What can you expect after the operation?

    • For the first four weeks, the capsule needs to heal. You will walk with crutches but are allowed to bear full weight. Sometimes a flexion brace is necessary.
    • After four weeks, you will have a follow-up appointment. Rehabilitation can then begin.
    • You can then gradually resume daily activities.

    Our approach

At the European Hip Center, we combine advanced surgical techniques with personalised care. HipCloud, our digital platform, plays an important role in this:

    • Before the operation: preparation with education and guidance.
    • After the operation: monitoring your recovery and support during rehabilitation.

This approach ensures a faster and safer recovery, tailored to your personal situation.
