Hamstring Repair, Reinsertion of the Hamstring Tendon to the Ischial Tuberosity

In a proximal hamstring tear, typically seen in athletes or after a fall, the tendon detaches from the ischial tuberosity. Dr. Vandeputte reattaches the tendon with anchors to fully restore strength and function.

    What is a Hamstring Repair?

In the event of a hamstring tear, hamstring repair surgery can be performed.

The aim of this surgery is to restore the anatomy so that you can resume your activities.

This surgery is performed by our specialist Dr. Vandeputte, who specialises in treating muscle injuries.

Pre-operative: patient with a hamstring rupture on the left hip.

    Post-operative: a repaired hamstring.

How is a Hamstring Repair Performed?

    • You will be given general anaesthesia. During the operation, you will lie on your stomach.
    • The hamstrings are made visible through an incision beneath the gluteal fold.
    • The surgeon reattaches the hamstrings to the ischial tuberosity with several anchors.
    • The wound is closed with surgical glue and subcutaneous absorbable sutures.
    • This operation takes 1.5 hours and is performed as day-case surgery.

Our HipCloud application guides and monitors the pre- and post-operative trajectory.

    What to Expect After Surgery?

    • Rehabilitation will be gentle for the first 6 weeks. You will use crutches for the first 2 to 4 weeks. A dynamic brace will prevent you from making sudden strenuous movements with your hamstrings.
    • At the 6-week follow-up consultation, rehabilitation will be adjusted if necessary. You can gradually resume daily activities.
    • After 5 to 6 months: resumption of sports activities.
