A gluteus medius tear causes persistent pain on the side of the hip and a waddling gait. We reattach the tendon to the thigh bone with anchors, restoring both anatomy and function.
What is a Gluteus Medius Repair?
In the case of a gluteus medius tear (lateral buttock muscle, see image on the right), a gluteus medius re-insertion can be performed.
The goal of this operation is to restore anatomy so that you can resume your activities.
This operation is performed by our specialist Dr. Vandeputte. He specializes in treating muscle injuries.
How is a Gluteus Medius Repair performed?
- You will be placed under general anaesthesia. During the operation, you lie on your unaffected side.
- Through an incision on the side of your hip, the lateral gluteal muscles are exposed.
- The surgeon reattaches the lateral gluteal muscles to the side of the thigh bone with several anchors.
- The wound is closed with sutures and surgical glue.
- You will stay in the hospital for 2 nights.
Our HipCloud application guides and monitors the pre- and post-operative trajectory.
What can you expect after the operation?
- For the first 6 weeks, the repaired tissue needs to heal. You will use crutches during this period. You may partially bear weight.
- After the follow-up consultation at 6 weeks, rehabilitation with your physiotherapist begins. You can gradually increase your daily activities.
- Full recovery can take 6 to 12 months.
