    Synovial Chondromatosis

    On this page

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition in which cartilaginous nodules (chondromas) form in the synovium, the membrane lining the joint. These nodules can detach from the synovium and float freely within the joint, leading to various symptoms and complications.

    What is synovial chondromatosis?

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare condition in which cartilaginous nodules (chondromas) form in the synovium, the membrane lining the joint. These nodules can detach from the synovium and float freely within the joint, leading to various symptoms and complications.

The cause is not fully understood, but it appears to be related to abnormal growth of cartilage cells in the synovium. This process is usually benign, but in rare cases it can pose a risk of malignant changes (chondrosarcoma).

    There are two forms:

    • Primary synovial chondromatosis: without an underlying cause.
    • Secondary synovial chondromatosis: resulting from another joint condition, such as osteoarthritis or trauma.

    Possible symptoms

    Patients usually experience pain when:

    • Walking
    • Getting in or out of a car
    • Putting on and taking off shoes and socks
    • Standing up after prolonged sitting
    • Deep hip flexion
    • Hip rotations
    • Practising impact sports, deep bending movements and changes of direction

    Treatment

Surgery is not always necessary. If it is, arthroscopy or total hip arthroplasty may be performed.
